When Mr and Mrs Carter moved into their charming bungalow in West Moors, the roof looked fine from ground level-but they wanted peace of mind heading into winter. They called KNJ Roofing and we booked them onto our Annual Roof Maintenance Plan.
Our first inspection revealed early signs of moss growth, a blocked downpipe and a few cracked tiles above the kitchen extension-nothing urgent, but enough to warrant attention.
We cleaned the gutters, replaced the damaged tiles, applied a moss treatment and scheduled seasonal check-ups. Now, two years on, their roof is in excellent condition with no leaks, no surprises and no costly repairs.

Slate and tiled roofs in Dorset benefit from regular checks-ideally twice a year. If you notice any slipped, missing or damaged tiles, it’s crucial to get them sorted before any harm reaches the roof timbers or internal ceilings. Traditional slates can be re-secured with copper ties (known as “tingles”), while heavy stone slates usually require nailing or pegging in place. For individual clay tiles, they’re often reattached by hooking their nibs or pegs back over the battens.

Hairline cracks in mortar fillets should be repaired through repointing, but widespread damage might call for a full rebuild using lime mortar-not cement. Whenever possible, keep original mortar and other traditional details rather than replacing them outright with lead.
If lead flashings have become split or holed, it may be necessary to replace sections with matching lead. Vertical splits can be patched using short overlapping pieces, wedged and sealed to match the original construction.

Ridges typically need replacing multiple times during a thatch’s life. Localised repairs, especially where water run-off or wildlife have caused wear, can add years to a thatch’s life. Always keep lofts well-ventilated and free of old straw. Chimneys should be swept twice a year and their condition monitored-especially within the roof space.
If your lead roof sheeting still has some life left in it, welding is the best long-term fix for splits and holes (never solder). For short-term solutions, specialist adhesive tapes can work. If full sheets have degraded, a replacement will be needed.
Roofs made of lightweight materials such as aluminium, stainless steel or copper are more vulnerable to wind damage. Loose sheets should be re-secured promptly to prevent “drumming” or complete failure. Minor issues like punctures can be patched with matching materials.
